The year 2022 saw an increase in violence targeting Muslims during Hindu festivals in several states of India. Most of the attacks followed a similar pattern: carrying out Hindu festival processions in Muslim-dominated areas, playing anti-Muslim songs on loudspeakers, chanting communal slogans and attacking properties owned by Muslims.
During the Hindu festival of Ram Navami in April 2022, a similar pattern of violence was reported in several states including Karnataka, Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Residents of Karauli, a town in Rajasthan, witnessed communal violence for the first time in recent years during the Hindu New Year on 2 April, 2022. The incident occurred when a bike rally organised by several right-wing organisations was crossing a Muslim-dominated area.
